As Paris readies itself to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, an alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old Australian woman has cast a shadow over the city’s final preparations.
The incident, currently under investigation by French authorities, reportedly took place between July 19 and 20 in the Montmartre district, a popular area known for its nightlife.
The woman, who fled to a kebab shop in distress, provided limited details to police due to language barriers. The news has prompted concern, especially as thousands of athletes and tourists arrive in Paris for the Games.
In response, Team Australia’s chef de mission, Anna Meares, expressed sympathy for the victim and urged athletes to take extra precautions, such as avoiding going out alone and blending in by wearing plain clothes. This incident has intensified focus on the security measures already in place across Paris, where 45,000 police officers and 10,000 soldiers have been deployed.
As the city prepares for the world’s attention, the safety of all participants is paramount, and Paris is determined to ensure that this tragic event does not overshadow the Games.
